Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) troubleshooting

This page provides information about troubleshooting your UPS

Introduction

Your UPS is a large battery and will be connected to your server (whether this is a till or a separate computer). The power comes into your UPS then the UPS is connected to your server, therefore it is continually charging.

If the power fails in your venue, after a short while it will send a signal to the server to safely shutdown and it will provide enough power to do this. This mitigates the risk that if the server is just powered off unexpectedly during trade, you are highly likely to lose a significant amount of trading and sales data.

Warning: If your UPS is disconnected from your server, you run a real risk of data loss.

We supply UPS from the APC brand, and are usually one of these models:

APC 500 APC 650 APC 700 APC Easy Back Up

Troubleshooting

The unit is beeping intermittently The most common cause of this is that the battery needs replacing. PLEASE DO NOT DISCONNECT THE UPS. Contact the Support Help Desk who can order a replacement battery, and mute the beeping in the interim.
The server won't turn on

Complete the following checks:

  • Ensure the UPS is connected to a live power socket.
  • Ensure all cables are forcefully pushed into the sockets in the UPS.
  • Ensure the UPS is turned on (green light comes on).
  • Ensure the cables are intact and in working order.
  • Ensure the yellow battery connector is pressed in firmly.
  • Press the reset button the rear of the UPS.
The unit is beeping continually This indicates there is a power supply failure from the mains and your UPS is powering your server.
