Introduction

Kobas makes use of various settings on your router to ensure that all your devices can contact each other, and that your server can communicate with the internet.

If you are thinking of changing your internet router, you must follow these instructions before removing the old router.

Your new router must be set with the same details as your old router, so we must first gather that data, then update the new router once it’s in place.

Before you remove the current router

First, we need to establish what your current router’s IP address is – follow these instructions on a laptop while you are still connected to the existing router:

On Windows:

  • Press Win + R
  • A run prompt should open in the bottom left
  • Type cmd into the input and press enter
  • A command prompt will open
  • Type the following into the command prompt and click enter

ipconfig | findstr /i "Gateway"

  • Your Default gateway, probably something like 192.168.0.1, will be shown. Make a note of this IP address.

On MacOS:

  • Open the OSX Terminal: Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal / Or you can press cmd+space and type terminal
  • Type the following command and press enter.

netstat -nr | grep default

  • Your router's default IP will be shown, probably something like 192.168.0.1. Make a note of this IP address.

Now we have the current router’s IP address, we can use it to access the router settings.

Type the address into the search bar in your browser, and log in to the router portal. You will need a username and password for this, which is usually printed on the router. If you don’t have these details, try Googling “[network provider] default username and password”, or contact your network provider.

Once you are logged in, navigate to the LAN settings (often under Advanced Settings) and make a note of the DHCP Starting IP Address and Ending IP Address.

Once you have connected the new router

You must now set the new router to the same IP address as the old one. You can usually find the new router’s IP printed on a sticker somewhere on it.

You will also need the Username and Password for the router – if this is not printed then you can contact your network provider for these credentials.

On a laptop connected to the new router’s network, type this IP address into the search bar on your browser.

You can now log in with the username and password, and find the LAN settings. These are often listed under Advanced Settings.

Change the IP Address to the same IP as your previous router.

In the DHCP settings, add the same Starting and Ending IP address as your previous router.

iPads and other tablets

These devices sometimes save their previous network details and don’t update automatically. If your tablets are not working following a network change, follow these instructions:

  • Delete any homepage links to the Kobas EPoS or Kobas KDS webapps
  • Go to Network Settings and press Reset
  • Connect to the new router’s network
  • Follow the instructions in our articles for setting up a new device as EPoS or KDS.
